Stone RUFC 24 – Newport 5

Stone rugby club saw off Newport 24-5 last weekend and continue to be the team to beat this season.

New to the Merit League, Newport travelled to Stone hoping to make their mark. However, things did not start well for the visitors. Within five minutes of the kick-off they lost a man with a suspected broken leg and soon after John Bekalo put the home side in front with a penalty.

Stone added to their lead midway through the first half with Tom Adamson crossing the line and Bekalo adding the conversion. The last 10 minutes before the break saw Stone putting up an impenetrable defence in the face of a relentless Newport attack.

Strong throughout the match, Newport’s pack got their reward when they drove the Stone scrum back all the way to score early in the second half. Joe Powell and Gary Cunningham added two tries, both converted by “Mr 100%”, the narcissist formerly known as Bekalo!
