Amy Wheat, a Year 6 student at Stone’s Christ Church Academy, has been out and about picking litter in her local neighbourhood thanks to equipment made available from Stafford Borough Council.
Amy took the initiative to tidy up her local environment with the aim of helping to care for wildlife and also to prevent the dangers that litter can cause.
So far, Amy has undertaken two trips on her litter picking adventures; firstly, she’s picked from Aston down to the Common Plot via the canal side towpath. Secondly, she’s covered the Uttoxeter Road area, from The 3 Crowns to the Little Stoke Cricket Club and back – earning herself a well-deserved J2O at The 3 Crowns from her parents.
Amy has utilised collection bags, pickers and vests from Stafford Borough Council’s Streetscene team, and she’s keen to get her friends and their families onboard for the future litter picks she has planned.
About her litter picking, Amy told A Little bit of Stone:
“I had noticed lots of rubbish around the local area and wanted to do my bit to remove it and make sure the animals we have like ducks, swans and hedgehogs are not harmed from the things people leave behind.”
Her parents, Matt and Anne Marie Wheat added:
“We are both really proud that Amy has been driven to take on doing this herself and prompting us to assist her. We hope others will follow her lead and make the area we live the best it can be.”
