Stone Sustainable Fashion Show is looking for models and creators

Fashion ShowThe Sustainable Fashion Show is taking place at the Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters in December – but the group behind the project are appealing for help now.

The Stafford Borough Community Climate Change Panel is calling on residents, local groups and organisations to create garments to be paraded at the event. Those interested can apply to register for free by emailing c.firkins@staffordshirefire.gov.uk

The clothes can be second-hand or recycled. They can be adapted from any era, any culture, or even made from bedding or curtains – with the event aiming to showcase the opportunity of giving garments a second life.

The Community Climate Change Panel has teamed up with Sustainability Matters, The Fire Service and Staffordshire Police to put on the show on Friday, the 1st of December.

Roisin Chambers, Chair of the Community Climate Panel, said:

“Of the 100 billion garments produced each year, 92 million tonnes end up in landfills. To put things in perspective, this means that the equivalent of a rubbish truck full of clothes ends up on landfill sites every second.

“We want this show to inspire others to give their old material a new lease of life and I can’t wait to see some of the imaginative ways that people come up with to transform their clothing.”

She added: “But we are appealing for people to register to take part in the event now. It is free to enter and looks set to be a fantastic night, and hopefully, it will give food for thought for those looking to go out and buy new clothes in the run-up to Christmas.”

Councillor Tony Pearce, Cabinet Member for Climate Change at Stafford Borough Council, said:

“I hope residents, groups and organisations will get behind this excellent initiative and support our partners in putting on a great show. People are often quick to buy new clothes when, with a little imagination, they can make what they already have into something new. So, as well as preventing clothes being thrown away, this can also save money.”

The closing date to register to take part in the event is Friday 27 October, and to do so, email c.firkins@staffordshirefire.gov.uk.

The Sustainable Fashion Show will occur at the Fire HQ in Pirehill, Stone on Friday, the 1st of December, from 7.30pm.
