Stone to get High Street cash machine as Post Office applies for planning

A new cash machine could soon be arriving in Stone, as the town’s Post Office applies for planning permission to install an ATM at its premises at the bottom of the High Street.

A return of free cash withdrawals to the town centre

The proposal would see a 24-hour ATM installed through a window panel to the right of the main entrance. The application, submitted by NCR Atleos on behalf of Cash Zone, includes plans for modest, non-illuminated signage to sit above and beside the machine.

If approved, the new ATM will offer free cash withdrawals for residents, shoppers and visitors – restoring access to cash on the High Street after the town lost its last cash machine in 2024, when Lloyds Bank closed its branch.

News of a new banking hub coming to the former Betfred shop had given residents hope that a new ATM might be on the way. However, Cash Access UK, who are leading the project, recently confirmed to A Little Bit of Stone that they would not be installing a cash machine at that site.

Sensitive installation in a historic building

The property is a Grade II listed building located within a conservation area, so careful consideration has been given to preserving its appearance and heritage. The building dates back to the mid-18th century and retains a 20th-century shopfront.

According to the submitted design statement, the ATM installation will:

  • Replace an existing glazed panel with a silicone-jointed unit housing the ATM.
  • Include a small logo panel and top sign in neutral colours, with no lighting.
  • Be fully reversible, allowing the building to be returned to its previous state in future.

Designed with accessibility and safety in mind

The ATM has been designed to be accessible for all users, including wheelchair access and tactile markers for blind or visually impaired individuals. The location is already well-lit, overlooked by pedestrians, and covered by CCTV.
