Stone Town Council considers and awards grants each year and at last nights town council meeting, 4 local organisations were successful in their grant applications, totalling £1750.
The Stone Town Council (STC) grants are available to properly constituted organisations who meet a number of conditions. Grant applications can be for up to a maximum of £500; however, they do consider amounts above this in exceptional circumstances.
For this round of grants there were applications from:
- AEDdonate
- Stone Choral Society
- Aston Lodge Residents Association
- Oulton First School
AEDdonate
This Stone based charity was asking for a £500 grant towards the cost of replacing the batteries and pads in the community defibrillators in the town. Their revenue has been hit by the closing of their charity shops during the Covid pandemic.
Councillor Leason proposed that the council supports the local charity’s grant application for £500 to be spent within the town. The application request was passed by the remaining members of the council.
Stone Choral Society
Stone Choral Society had applied for a grant of £500 with the purpose: “To educate the public in the arts and sciences, and in particular the art and science of music, by the presentation of concerts and other activities.”
Councillor Hood proposed the application with the choral society being unable to go out and do their usual fundraising, also highlighting the benefit that music gives to mental wellbeing. The council backed the grant application and awarded the society their requested £500.
Aston Lodge Residents Association
The Aston Lodge Residents Association asked the council for a £250 contribution towards a £400 project to raise awareness of the residential estate’s 30mph speed limit.
Cllr Green proposed the application to produce professionally printed posters on the estate with a design already submitted by a local child. The council backed the application unanimously.
Oulton First School
Oulton First School’s application was for £500 as they looked to introduce “tablet learning” into class 1, nursery and reception which the Covid lockdown has impacted.
Cllr Hood proposed the application, highlighting the inclusivity of the school. Cllr Jim Davies went on to explain that the council doesn’t usually support applications to buy educational equipment like this, but in the current climate, it seemed appropriate.
Cllr Hatton queried the supporting of a town outside of the parish, and whether the remaining grant budget could support similar applications from schools within the town. Cllr Powell acknowledged Cllr Hatton’s concerns but did point out that many of the town’s children attend the Oulton School setting with many other councillors supported this aspect of the query.
The application for the £500 was put to a vote, and the vote passed unanimously.
