Stone town council switch back to Christmas light switch on

Following residents feedback, Stone Town Council has confirmed that the 2021 Christmas lights switch on WILL go ahead this November in person!

At last month’s town and tourism committee meeting, a vote was passed to hold a virtual Christmas light switch-on for the second year running. However, following residents dismay, the subject came up for debate again at this week’s full town council meeting.

Following feedback from residents and after discussions around what the council could do, the council voted overwhelmingly to u-turn on their previous decision and for Stone to hold a safe and welcoming in-person Christmas lights switch-on in the town.

The lights will be turned on by Father Christmas on Thursday 25th November 2021

Councillor Jill Hood, Chairman of Town & Tourism, told A Little Bit of Stone:

“Many Stone residents approached me to express their disappointment and discuss the reasons taken by the Town and Tourism committee not to go ahead with the Christmas Lights Switch-on.

I was able to air the views of those residents to the full council during the recommendations of the tourism minutes.

People want the lights switch-on to be an event again this year and after listening to their views expressed in a common-sense manner, we are happy to change our minds.”

Jill added:

“We all look forward to the night which attracts hundreds of people to the town and we are determined to make it a memorable evening as usual.

Father Christmas is absolutely thrilled and has already begun the journey from Lapland to Stone to switch on the lights with the winner of the Christmas Card competition.”
