Stone’s independent traders are teaming up to encourage people to shop local by urging us to spend at least a fiver a week in the town.
The appeal is part of a Totally Local campaign. There are 13 Totally Locally town campaigns so far in the UK, including Leek, which all work to persuade local people to support their local businesses.
The campaign gives traders the online space and marketing tools to encourage people to shop local, but it is very much up to local people to make it work. And there is certainly an appetite for the campaign among Stone’s local independent traders as around 45 of them attended a meeting with Totally Locally organisers a couple of weeks ago.
Another meeting is planned soon and the Totally Local campaign in Stone could be up and running in June.
Laurence Tunnicliffe, owner of Panda Press, was at the inaugural meeting and believes the campaign could have a real impact. He said: “I think the organisers were expecting 15 to 20 traders. The fact that so many turned up, more than double that, is a real sign that traders want to get behind this. There are so many brilliant independent businesses in Stone offering so many services and products but the ‘use it or lose it’ phrase has never been more important.”

Hi Jeanette – thanks for posting! Totally Locally’s a fab idea and I hope it’s a huge success. I’m coming along to the next meeting to see how A Little Bit of Stone can get involved and help make sure it is ^Jamie

It is a simple choice to support independent locally run businesses. It makes perfect sense.

The £5 people are being asked to spend is not extra to what they would normally spend but to spend it in the town ie buy your veggies at the greengrocers not at the supermarket, visit your local yarn shop instead of shopping on line (bit of self promotion – ta)
‘USE US OR LOSE US’ is definately the message in todays economy.
