Stonefield Park, a hidden gem in the north of the town, will be part of a borough-wide tribute marking 80 years since the end of World War II.
This summer, a commemorative floral design will take pride of place in the park’s carpet bed, created to honour Victory in Europe (VE) Day and Victory over Japan (VJ) Day. The living tribute will include the Royal British Legion logo at its heart and mirrors a similar display being planted in Victoria Park, Stafford.

The specially themed floral arrangements are part of a wider programme recognising the 80th anniversary of the end of WW2, with VE Day falling on 8th May and VJ Day on 15th August. These dates mark the official end of the conflict in Europe and the final surrender of Japanese forces later that year.
Councillor Gillian Pardesi, Cabinet Member for Leisure at Stafford Borough Council, said the tribute was a meaningful way to honour the past.
“The decision to have a floral decoration to commemorate these two extremely important days in our history was a very easy one.
Both parks are very much loved and have been recognised nationally for their quality and this will be a fitting tribute to encourage people to remember those who sacrificed so much to protect the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Stonefield Park, like its Stafford counterpart, holds a Green Flag Award, which is a national recognition of high standards in parks and green spaces. It’s a valued part of the local landscape and well-used by residents throughout the year.
The WW2-themed display follows a tradition of commemorative planting in both borough parks. Previous tributes have included nods to the NHS, armed forces, Samaritans, and major royal milestones including the Platinum Jubilee and the coronation of King Charles III.

Locals in Stone are being encouraged to mark the occasion with their own local events. The borough council has waived street party fees for VE and VJ Day commemorations, encouraging neighbourhoods to come together in celebration and remembrance.
