The new Tarmac tennis courts opened to players at Stonefield Park on Friday 3rd September.
It costs £4 to hire a court for an hour, or £2 for concessions. There was a lot of opposition to the borough council’s decision earlier this year to get rid of the grass courts. Many residents on Field Terrace certainly miss the birds that would occupy the courts first thing in the morning! More seriously, many people felt a big part of the park’s heritage has gone.
The new Tarmac courts have been painted green and the surface certainly looks the part. It remains to be seen, however, whether the council’s view that people can now play tennis all year round will bear fruit. We’ll see if they’re being used on a wet November day.
Have you played on the new courts yet? I’d love to know what you think.
