Stone Library made a heroic start to this year’s Summer Reading Challenge with 101 local children signing up last Saturday.
Face painting and ‘fantastical craft and colouring’ activities kept the youngsters entertained whilst staff and volunteers worked tirelessly throughout the day to get the children under way with their ‘Mythical Maze’ adventure.

Stone also has a legendary list of activities lined up for the school holidays for the young bookworms to enjoy, and to encourage them to reads the six books required, collect their stickers and claim their completers’ medals.
These include a ‘Make your own Monster’ craft event, a clay dragon workshop, ‘Slithery Serpents’ finger puppets activity and Hero Academy: a day where the children can listen to the tale of Perseus and Medusa, meet a real knight and take part in a fun mythological craft session.
Library Chief, County Councillor Mike Lawrence said: “We were hoping for a good turnout for ‘Mythical Maze’ following last year’s record breaking Challenge and Stone Library really has got off to a flying start. Congratulations to all those involved and big thank you to our gallant volunteers, who I know were worked off their feet to get everyone signed up.
“’Mythical Maze’ is a fun way for the county’s youngsters to banish the holiday boredom and encourage them to read for pleasure.”
