Suspected drink driver crashes into river near Stone

A Stoke-on-Trent man has been arrested over an accident in the early hours of Saturday

Staffordshire police were called to reports of a road traffic collision at around 1:00am on Saturday 24 February 2018 on the Longton Road in Stone.

Upon arrival, officers observed that a Vauxhall Corsa appeared to have failed to take the bend. The car had crashed through the barrier and down the embankment into the river below.

The driver, a Dominic Simpson, was the only person in the vehicle and only suffered minor cuts and bruises. The 21-year-old from Birkholme Drive, Stoke-on-Trent was arrested and has subsequently been charged with driving a motor vehicle when above the legal alcohol limit.

Simpson has been released on bail to appear at Cannock Magistrate’s Court on 12 March.

The vehicle was recovered by a specialist crane and recovery team on the afternoon of the incident.
