Swan stops traffic on A34 – no, really

If you took a picture of the swan on the A34, please help us to remove this boring stock picture by emailing it to news@alittlebitofstone.com

Motorists on the A34 were caught in an hour-long traffic jam on Thursday morning after a stubborn swan waddled on to the road and refused to budge.

Motorists were held up for about an hour at the Darlaston Inn roundabout from 9.15am on Thursday 22nd December as police and staff from Amerton Farm’s British Wildlife Rescue Centre coaxed the bird from the carriageway and into the river near the Darlaston Inn.

Hannah Stoney from Stone, who owns the Yellowstone Art Boutique at the Trentham Estate, saw the bizarre scene as she was travelling towards Trentham.

She said: “The police and the rescue centre staff were trying to coax it away with bread.
“It was amazing to see. The swan was brilliant. It was just looking at the queue of traffic, thinking, ‘What??’.”

A Staffordshire Police spokesman said today: “Police were called to the Darlaston Inn island after reports that traffic was being held up by a swan. Staff from a nearby animal rescue sanctuary were able to encourage the swan to move from the road and back into the river.”

Were you caught up in the traffic? Did you take a picture? Please say you did. I really need to see a picture! Email news@alittlebitofstone.com
