Spectators were treated to a thrilling match of cup cricket at Swynnerton on Sunday 5th May as Jason Revills’ Stone SP 1st XI welcomed Hanford in the first round of the Talbot Cup.
The visitors batted first and posted a formidable 246 for 9 in their 45 overs. Shafique Hussain (4 for 58) and Wasim Khan (2 for 36) were the pick of the bowlers as the ball was dispatched to all parts of Swynnerton Park. In all, 28 boundaries helped Hanford to their total.
Not to be put off, Stone openers Dan Lunn (39) and Simon Farmer (53) set about the task with confidence, sharing an opening stand of 79. Upon the fall of Lunn’s wicket, Hussain came to the crease and eased to 59.
Although a few wickets fell, it was Tom Chandler who scored the winning runs in the very last over to take his side through to the next round against Wedgwood.
A sunny bank holiday Sunday with 493 runs, 16 wickets and a last over finish – cricket doesn’t get much better than that!
