Two former school leaders who helped make Stone’s Christmas lights switch-on sparkle with song for more than 25 years have stepped down, receiving heartfelt thanks from town councillors.

Musical memories and community spirit
Mary Gale and Sue Campbell-Kelly, both former heads of St Michael’s First School, have been at the heart of the children’s choir at the town’s annual Christmas event for a quarter of a century.
Their musical leadership has not only filled Stone High Street with festive cheer but has also taken young voices from the town to venues like Victoria Hall in Hanley.
Now stepping back from their festive duties, the pair were celebrated by members of Stone Town Council during a meeting this week.
A tribute in tune
Councillors paid tribute to the duo with warm words and a nod to a pop classic. Councillor Jill Hood said:
“Both have the magic ability to form such wonderful choirs. Your energy could power the town Christmas lights.
Beyond the music, Sue and Mary taught generations of children not only how to sing but to belong.
Here’s to Sue and Mary, great ambassadors for music and community champions.
Stone won’t be the same without their songs and laughter. Thank you for the music and for everything over the last 25 years.”
Fond farewells and fond memories
Mrs Campbell-Kelly told councillors: “We have enjoyed every second of it.”

Mrs Gale reflected on their wider involvement in the community, sharing an anecdote from their early days helping at the town bonfire.
“I remember one year it rained so much we took the children into the Crown Hotel. Then they told us off because we wet the carpets.”
A lasting legacy
The Christmas lights switch-on remains a cherished event in Stone’s calendar, and the contribution of Mary and Sue has helped shape it into a festive tradition beloved by many.
Their enthusiasm and commitment to music and young people have left a lasting impression—one that’s likely to echo through future choirs for years to come.
