Traders at Stone farmers’ market made sure that rain (and wind) did not stop play today after the weather conditions meant none of the red-and-green marquees could be erected.
Many traders still decided to stay for the day and sold their goods from the backs of cars and vans, makeshift tables and underneath gazebos. The usual farmers’ market day sight of red-and-green marquees on the High Street was replaced by what looked like a rainy car boot sale!
Stafford Borough Council contractors had started to erect the stalls at 5am but decided the windy conditions made them much too dangerous.
A number of stalls had been put up and were promptly taken down after they were in danger of floating away in the wind.
Full credit to the traders who stuck around and made the best of a bad situation. This is only the second time in the market’s seven-year history that stalls have not been erected.
Borough and town councillor Richard Stevens praised stallholders and shopkeepers in the town. He said: “At one point, staff from Hammersley’s bakery lent a market trader some tables and everyone was chipping in to help everyone else.”
Let’s hope the sun’s shining for the next market on Saturday 5th March.
