A pop-up restaurant that specialises in giving Western classics an Indian street food spin will be at Stone Food and Drink Festival this year, and is cooking up a storm at events and private parties all over Staffordshire.
Before October’s food festival in Stone, The Urban Turban will be at the Newcastle Jazz and Blues Festival this weekend.
The concept is the brainchild of Niven Ziad, once the former operator of Lazeez in Stoke-on-Trent that was noted many years ago for its innovative Indian cuisine. Niven – who in the day runs a cooking project for disadvantaged teenagers at the newly refurbished Wheatsheaf in Oulton (more on that HERE) – wanted to bring back his style of cooking to a mainstream audience once again – but this time in a pop-up style.
Running the Recipe For Success project for disadvantaged kids up at The Wheatsheaf is taking up a lot of my time but I’m still passionate about cooking Indian food that is different and better than what’s out there, so I came up with the idea of a pop-up restaurant that I could take to festivals and events.
“The Urban Turban is about taking traditional ‘Western’ foods and putting an Indian street food spin on them. For example, one of our biggest sellers is a Spicy Fried Chicken Burger with popodoms and nacho cheese sauce. People always comment on how good it is.”
The Urban Turban will next be “popping up” at Newcastle Jazz and Blues Festival and then later on in the year at Stone Food and Drink Festival, with other dates in between in the pipeline. The company also does al ot of smaller house parties and corporate catering.
“While we can do the more obscure Indian style ideas,” Niven added. “We can also cater for the more traditional taste buds and often we can be found at house parties dropping off big pots of curries, rice and breads for smaller events. We also do well with corporate catering, either business lunches or events that take place within the workplace.”
