Almost 5,000 people were treated to a fire service frenzy at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service’s Family Day on Saturday at their Stone HQ – and over £2,000 is expected to have been raised for The Fire Fighters Charity.
Service mascot Welephant entertained the crowds, while firefighters gave rope rescue, car crash and house fire rescue demonstrations throughout the day. Visitors also got to tour the service’s Control room and climb aboard the fire engines.
The event also saw the launch of the 2012 ‘Push the Button’ campaign and visitors were encouraged to remember to test their smoke alarm on a weekly basis. Other activities included student firefighter hose competitions, a portable bowling alley game, face painting, circus skills and games in the StreetStadia sports arena.
Event organiser Jude Russell said: “It was a fantastic day, we couldn’t have asked for better weather and the turnout was unbelievable! We took over 80 referrals for free Home Fire Risk Checks on the day. The fire service demonstrations were really popular, along with the fire appliances and of course Welephant! Most importantly people went away with a reminder about how important fire and road safety is. We look forward to doing it all again in two years’ time.”
