Toilets locked at the Crown Hotel

The new keypad lock on the cloakroom doors

The Crown Hotel has put a keypad lock on its toilets, with customers now having to show their receipt at the bar or reception to get the day’s code.

A sign on the cloakroom door in the High Street hotel says: “These toilets are now only for the use of our valued paying guests. If you are a paying customer simply take your receipt to reception or bar and they will give you the number required.”

A number of critical comments have been posted on A Little Bit of Stone’s Facebook page.

Michelle Kendall says: “This will surely put people off from going in altogether.”

Victoria King says: “Are customers complaining about non-customers using the toilets? I don’t think so!”

However, David Hawbrook says on Twitter: “Surely they are not public toilets and the Crown has every right to to do what it wants with regards access to non-customers.”

What do you think?

  • I am personally horrified that there has been any critical comments at all. I used to work at the hotel some years back, and the amount of people that used to come in – not buy anything and use (sometimes making quite a mess of) the toilets was shocking. The public in stone need to realise they have never been public toilets, and it is the constant abusing of the situation that is more than likely behind the reason the lock has been put on. Im happy this has happened, im sure it will make the life of the staff and regular customers at the hotel much more enjoyable!!! some people need to get a life!

  • I understand why they have done this – but a replacement public toilet in the centre of town is needed. To go right to the top of town to St Doms or outside of town to the car park…. its a very long walk for the elderly and maybe a distance too far for young children.
Where does anyone suggest they should be put? Or alternatively one of those self contained units that the street furniture folks make???/
