£3.5 million would go into the local Stone economy each year if every adult in the town spent a fiver in our local independent shops instead of supermarkets and other chain stores.
The figure was revealed at a meeting of ‘Totally Locally Stone’ at the Crown Hotel last night, a campaign that will be launching in the town in the next few months with a Totally Locally Day in the town centre.
There are 13 Totally Locally towns so far in the UK where local independent businesses work together to encourage local people to buy their products and services.
One of the first was Leek and Mark Briand – owner of Colloco Homeware and Gifts in the town- spoke to Stone businesspeople about the success of the campaign there and special Christmas and Easter initiatives aimed at putting local businesses at the heart of the community.
Kevin Lapthorn from Stone’s Direct Flooring Warehouse said at the meeting: “Businesses in Stone each have their unique selling point. For example, Home & Colour has a huge range of stock. You may have to spend a few pence more but you save the petrol money from not having to travel to B&Q.”
Jill Hood from Bev’s Bakery said: “There are so many fantastic independent businesses in Stone and the surrounding area. That’s a huge selling point for the town. By working together we can really make a difference.”
