TV date with James May for Ringers!

James May’s Man Lab will feature Stone Handbell Ringers in the autumn

Stone Handbell Ringers will be appearing on TV after they were invited to perform the theme tune for an edition of James May’s Man Lab series on BBC2.

The theme tune was written by James May himself and he has invited various groups to do an arrangement of his music to close each programme of the new series, which is due to go out in the autumn. The team worked on the arrangement all last week – they only had one full rehearsal before going to London this week to record their segment of the show.

Musical director Paul Mellor said: “We all feel very flattered to have been asked to do this – especially as this is our 35th anniversary year. It’s a great way to celebrate. We’re all very excited about the prospect of doing this. Although we’ve appeared on regional TV programmes many times, a national TV date is a first for us.”

It’s been quite a week for the Handbell Ringers as they’ve also been nominated for The Sentinel’s Our Heroes awards.

Paul added: “We’re over the moon to have been nominated for such an award. Most of the concerts we do are for charities – they always have been – charity organisations book us to help them raise funds and we only charge a nominal fee to cover the team’s expenses. We must have helped to raise thousands of pounds over the years.”

We had a brilliant day in London – the recording session went really well – James May loved our version of the theme tune he had written.  The new series of Man Lab will go out during October and November and the ringers will close show 4 in the series of 5 programmes.
