Sam Hale, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for the Stone constituency, said: “One of the main issues that I keep coming across on the doorstep is how people are struggling to get access to our local GP services. Local practices are facing a perfect storm of eroding budgets, nationally imposed targets and an aging population, and our hardworking doctors are simply not getting the support they need.”

The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) has identified up to 600 practices across the country where more than 90% of the GPs are aged 60 or over, many of whom will retire over the next 12 months. The RCGP has also highlighted concerns that more and more GPs will suffer burnout as they struggle to keep up with the pressure of ever-growing numbers of patients.
