Keep your eyes out next week (w/b 4th February) for a leaflet dropping through your door from Stafford Borough Council that will officially start the consultation on development plans at Westbridge Park.
The debate about plans for a new leisure centre, play facilities and some form of retail development at Westbridge have been rumbling since a fiery public meeting at Alleyne’s High School late last year. The Keep Westbridge Park Green campaign group was established and a petition of almost 5,000 signatures handed in to the borough council. A group of residents who are positive about plans to develop the park, on the other hand, have used Facebook to press their case – search Facebook for ‘A new leisure centre for Westbridge Park, Stone’. You can see A Little Bit of Stone’s coverage of the issue over the last few months HERE.
Stafford Borough Council’s plans will include:
- A new leisure centre with six-lane, 25m swimming pool, gym, three multi-purpose rooms / aerobic studios and a consultation / training room
- Toddler, junior and teenage play facilities
- Improved event space
- Retained scout hut and canoe club provision
- Improved guide hut provision
It is thought that leisure centre development would come first and the food store would follow. The borough council is also considering gifting the event area to Stone Town Council. The plans will not include a new health centre.
I’ll include more details as soon as I have them and they’re officially confirmed. And I’ll make sure that the leaflet from the borough council is available on the website. Please make sure that you take part in the consultation and have your say – whichever side of the argument you’re on.
