Will brewery ghost be found on Halloween night?

Stone’s Direct Recruitment are inviting brave souls to their offices on Halloween night to investigate some seriously spooky goings-on!

The ghost hunt is being held at their offices in the Co-op Arcade off the High Street on Saturday 31st October, starting at 8.30pm and ending in the small hours of Sunday morning. It costs £5 per person, with all proceeds from the night going to Cancer Research UK.

A professional ghost-hunting group will be there with a range of recording equipment. It’s set to be a pretty frightening affair, with a seance and a Ouija board too, so it’s not for the faint hearted. Adults are urged to think carefully about whether their children would be able to cope with it.

And this is why it could get spooky…

Last Halloween we asked Historical Society chairman Philip Leason for his gory stories about Stone. One of them was about the old Joules’s brewery in the town – the Co-op supermarket and the arcade buildings – including Direct Recruitment’s offices – are on part of the old Joule’s Brewery site.

It’s thought that the canons (priests) from nearby Stone Priory, near where St Michael’s Church now stands, set up the brew house, which was eventually taken over by Francis Joule in 1781. Over the years, many Joule’s workers told stories of a canon haunting the building. Workers reported hearing footsteps and feeling a cold chill as if someone had brushed past them…

The ghost hunt is being organised by Vicky Davis at Direct Recruitment, an experienced ghost hunter herself and a firm believer in the paranormal. She said: “We know there’s something strange going on here. Bumps and strange footsteps, a definite chill as you walk around. We’re hoping to see if we can get any evidence on the night.”

Call Vicky on 01785 819880 to book your place – if you dare…
