More details on the tour:

This tour will take in all elements of the gardens as they were introduced and tell the remarkable tale of what The Telegraph gardening section described as ‘   the makeover of the decade‘.

The tour starts in the Eastern Pleasure Ground with the hot colours and heady scents of the Floral Labyrinth and the breath-taking prairie garden landscape of the Rivers of Grass. Both of which were designed by Dutch plantsman, and Chelsea gold-medal winner Piet Oudolf. You’ll learn about the ideas behind both of these planting schemes and how they have changed with the passing of each year.

From there the tour takes in the remains of Trentham Hall, once one of England’s grandest country houses, now ageing beautifully, covered in Wisteria and a photographer’s dream. The tour then moves onto The Upper Flower Garden and The Italian Garden, both have been restored in the historic framework of Sir Charles Barry’s original designs of the 19th Century. The Italian Garden was designed by Chelsea Flower Show Gold-Medallist Tom Stuart-Smith and is now one of the largest contemporary perennial plantings in Europe. Bordering the Italian Garden are the Long Borders, again designed by Piet Oudolf, find out how these were used to compliment the planting in the Italian Garden. The tour will help you discover the planning that went into the gardens, as well as learning about the restoration of the Loggia, the balustrades and of course Perseus, who proudly stands at the head of the Italian Gardens.

You will also learn about the less well-known aspects of the gardens, from the Duke of Sutherland’s secret boat house to the Fifty Pence Piece which was gifted to the Trentham by the Bank of England.

The tours are conducted by award-winning gardener Clive Mollart, who was involved in the restoration of Trentham Gardens and can answer any questions you may have regarding the restoration.
