Worried about what’s next after school? A new helpline is here to help

A new helpline has been launched to support teenagers in Stone and across Staffordshire as they look ahead to life after GCSEs.

Open now and timed to coincide with the end of exam season, the helpline is run by Staffordshire County Council and offers practical advice for school leavers who are feeling unsure about their next steps.

While many students in the area will already have applied to college, there are still lots of teenagers who may be uncertain about what’s possible, especially if they’re feeling anxious about their results or aren’t sure if college or sixth form is the right fit.

“You don’t have to wait for results day”

Molly Wynn, a young woman with long straight hair, wearing a patterned blouse, standing outdoors in a sunlit modern plaza with trees and office buildings in the background.

Nineteen-year-old Molly Wynn, an apprentice with the council and one of the team answering the helpline, knows how it feels to choose a different route after school.

“Everyone has a future after school, no matter how their GCSEs went,” said Molly. “School doesn’t suit everyone, but that doesn’t mean they’re not good enough; they just need the right support.

There are so many brilliant options now, from apprenticeships to study programmes that help you build real work skills in more grown-up, supportive environments.”

Molly added that waiting until results day can mean missing out: “Courses like construction, hairdressing or social care are already filling up. If you think you might be interested, it’s best to look now.”

Support from Level 1 upwards

The helpline isn’t just for those looking at traditional academic routes. Whether it’s a hands-on trade course or a training scheme that includes the chance to resit English and maths in a practical way, there’s something for everyone.

Martin Murray, Deputy Leader of Staffordshire County Council and Cabinet Member for Economy and Skills, said:

“There is life after school for every young person, whatever their experience. And while young people have to stay in education or training until they’re 18, there’s a huge variety of environments and programmes available to suit different learning styles and personalities.

“If you haven’t applied yet, or if things didn’t go as well as you hoped with your exams, don’t panic—get in touch with the helpline now so you don’t miss out on the options that suit you best.”

Speak to someone today
