Young entrepreneurs hold trade fair in Stone

Sock Tree Monkey from Alleyne’s High School came out on top at last year’s YE trade fair in Stone

Young entrepreneurs from schools in Stone and Stafford are going head to head at a trade fair in Market Square on Saturday 2nd March as part of this year’s Young Enterprise programme.

The trade fair will see each of the companies set up their stands to sell their specially designed and manufactured products or services. With the farmers’ market also running on the day in the High Street, it will be a busy Saturday in the town centre!

YE teams run and manage their own companies, exactly mirroring a fully-functioning business, with their own board of directors. Teams have a mentor from a local business who pass on their experience and expertise. All the teams are aiming for a spot in the national finals – but there’s the borough, county and West Midlands stages to get through first.

On 2nd March, all the teams will have their stand up by 9am in Market Square and will need to impress the judges with their branding, merchandising and selling skills. Selling goes on until around 4pm, when the winners for the day are announced.

Two teams from Alleyne’s High School are taking part in this year’s competition:

What a win! Versaleaf celebrate their West Midlands victory at Birmingham University in 2011

Teams from Alleyne’s have shone in the Young Enterprise competition over the last few years. A group of entrepreneurs from Alleyne’s reached the national finals in 2011 with their Versaleaf company. Their product was based on the Japanese art of Furoshiki, where material is knotted together to form various shapes and sizes of bags. And last year the Sock Tree Company made the regional finals and just missed out on a place in the national final.

The teams from Alleyne’s this year are up against Walton High School, Weston Road Academy, St Dominic’s High School for Girls, Stafford Grammar School and Wolgarston High School for a place in the county-wide final.

Stuart Walton, chairman of the Stafford and Stone Young Enterprise programme, said: “We are delighted to be back for the fourth consecutive year in Stone. Having the Trade Fair on the same day as the Farmers’ Market provides a fantastic opportunity for our young achievers.

“The business done each year exceeds everyone’s expectations thanks to the warmth and generosity of the people of Stone. We are looking forward to another wonderful day on Saturday 2nd March. Please come and support us.”
