Young gardeners dig in at community allotments

Smartys Day Nursery allotment (3)

Tilling Drive Allotments in Walton is holding a ‘Dig for Victory’ open afternoon on Saturday 15th August. The allotments – which is managed by a community interest company – are a real community hub, with many town groups and charities having plots, as well as plenty of green-fingered individuals.

One of them is Smartys Day Nursery. Their plot is a hive of activity and is used regularly by little ones from their Little Stars nursery, which is just down the road from the allotments. Children have helped to grow strawberries, blackcurrants, rhubarb and tomatoes – and some delicious strawberry jam has been made – as well as lettuce, radish and beetroot.

The allotment is a great learning opportunity for the children and is used by Smartys across the curriculum.
