Young people in Stone have the chance to sign up and speak out by applying to become a candidate for the UK Youth Parliament.
Staffordshire’s UK Youth Parliament (UKYP) elections will be taking place on 22nd February next year and any young person aged between 11 and 18 can apply to become a candidate in their local area.
Elections are held every two years to choose Staffordshire’s members of the UK Youth Parliament. Staffordshire has five members (MYPs) who represent the county in the West Midlands Youth Parliament, and will also sit on Staffordshire’s Youth Action Kouncil (YAK), a decision-making body for the county’s young people. The elected members work hard to tackle burning issues on a local and national scale, and get involved in national debates and campaigns.
County Councillor Mike Lawrence, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: “Becoming a UKYP is a really worthwhile experience for any young person. It gives them the chance to get involved in the democratic process, focus on issues relevant to them and their local area, and also influence the county council on a variety of issues. Any young person in Staffordshire can apply to be a candidate, and I would urge anyone that has a passion for really making a difference to their local area to visit the Youthbox website and find out more. You’ll find that it’s incredibly rewarding.”
