Aldi boss says new Stone store will still open in spring 2011
A senior figure from Aldi has vowed that the new store in Stone will be open by March or April 2011, despite delays to essential roadworks on the A34 at the site.
One of the conditions of planning permission for the new supermarket – next to Walton Industrial Estate – was that road alterations and access arrangements had to be in place before building work could begin – and these works have been delayed.
But Aldi’s regional managing director Dan Ronald says the new store will be open as planned in the spring of next year. He said: “The biggest delay so far has been the movement of underground pipes but we are still on schedule. The roadworks are not a simple thing to do but the delay has not affected when we plan to open.”
When plans for the new store were submitted to Stafford Borough Council, opinion was divided, with 43 letters submitted in support – and 43 letters against the proposal. The supermarket will have retail floor space of 1,125 square metres and parking spaces for 75 vehicles.
