St Michael’s Hall has stood on Lichfield Street since 1911, having moved from smaller premises in Abbey Street. It began life as a working mens’ club and once supported a bar, snooker tables and a football team.

It suffered from a lack of TLC for many years and the new trustees are looking to give the building a new lease of life so that the organisations meeting there may continue to do so for a long time to come.

The new Trustees took over officially last Autumn, but had been running the hall for about 12 months before that, ensuring that the aims of the charity were being carried out – providing a venue for the people of Stone to carry out their activities.

The hall is in use every week night except Friday and also very often used at the weekend.

We host Stone Revellers Musical Theatre who rehearse up to three times a week all year round and also convert the main room into a theatre four times a year to put on productions that are well attended and often oversubscribed.

Phoenix Dance School meet there three times a week, Revellation Choir meet once a week as does a local keep fit class. Stone Historical and Civic Society also meet once a month. In addition we do pro bono bookings and also private parties. St Michael’s Church also use the hall but pay their way as, whilst the trustees are the Rector and Churchwardens of St Michael & St Wulfad’s Church, the hall is a completely separate entity being a registered charity with its own financial structure.

The lack of care has attracted vandalism and caused deterioration in the building which urgently needs a new roof, a rewire and toilets that can be accessed by the disabled. We are applying for grants and fundraising to help towards this. Grant applications are proving difficult to conclude satisfactorily as we do not meet eligibility criteria for many funding bodies.

If anyone is looking for a daytime venue, we can offer three large rooms, kitchen facilities and a warm welcome.

You can call Dennis on 07866 341111 for more information about booking the hall, or to help with fundraising.
