Minor injuries only after car crashes through Stone bakery window

Shoppers & staff luckily walked away with minor injuries this morning (30th April), after an 80 year old lady drove through the window of Walton bakery Orme & Devine.

At about 11:30 this morning the lady, who had parked in a space in front of the shop, lost control as she restarted the engine. The car mounted the small kerb and went through the window of the bakery. Fortunately the sales counters took the brunt of the impact, missing customers and staff as they were shunted towards the back of the shop. A couple of people were treated for shock, and one customer went to hospital as a precaution with concussion.

Seb & Chon from Orme & Devine told A Little Bit of Stone; ” We are so grateful that no-one was seriously hurt, and that the layout of the counters provided a barrier for our staff. The kerb is so low at the front of the shop that it offers no protection for an incident like this. Thankfully the damage is limited, and we hope to be able to get it repaired & open back up by Tuesday next week.”

The front of the shop has now been boarded up, and work is underway to repair internal damage.

A spokesperson from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service said; “A crew from Stone and one from Stafford attended Eccleshall Road to find a car had been in a collision with a bakery window and gone through into the premises.

“Checks were made on all the surrounding properties to make sure no structural damage had occurred. The electricity supply had also been shut off in case of issues.“The driver, aged in her 80s, was attended to be West Midlands Ambulance Service, as was a pedestrian. The driver was out of the vehicle by 11.55am but did not need to be taken to hospital. The pedestrian was taken in for further checks.

“The crew from Stone waited with Staffordshire Police officers for the vehicle to be recovered and carry out further structural checks, which were completed by 12.50pm. The scene was left in the care of police and the owner.”
