Here’s the Westbridge Park consultation leaflet

Here’s the full consultation leaflet on Westbridge Park that will be dropping through letterboxes next week.

Here’s the link – Westbridge Park consultation leaflet (it’s a PDF document).

The consultation is now live on the borough council website HERE.

The leaflet states: “The Borough Council is keen to assess public opinion and will not go ahead with the investment into a new leisure centre in Stone unless there is positive support from the community in the north of the borough. As part of this consultation, the Borough Council is asking if local residents would be prepared to see a new food store in a town centre, council-owned site, if it helps fund new leisure facilities and improvements to Westbridge Park.”

Article continues after this message

You can see it in the leaflet but click HERE  to see the borough’s visual plan for Westbridge Park that was put on the site earlier today. You can also see the borough council’s press release there that was issued to launch the consultation.

Two questions are asked in the leaflet:

1. Westbridge Park will retain a green and open space. What would you like that to include? [a number of options are given and space included for other ideas]

2. By accommodating a food store at Westbridge Park, which would be smaller than Morrisons, this will provide the funds needed to deliver a new leisure centre with 25m pool, fitness centre and aerobics studios, as well as retaining the open space and event area, scouts, guides and the canoe club at the park. Do you support this proposal? [Yes/No/Unsure – space for comments]

When you get the consultation leaflet you can return your completed form by post or send answers by email. The consultation is also online at www.staffordbc.gov.uk/westbridgepark. Make sure that you get involved. And don’t get forget the public consultation events…

The artist impressions in this leaflet are just ridiculous. They plainly exaggerate the open space which is going to be drastically reduced from what it is now. Looking at the plan view it becomes obvious that it is going to be approximately the width of a football pitch. Given that the council refuses to allow the football pitch to be used for other events, how can we possibly get large scale events in that area? I would love the idea of the new sports centre but am loathe to support the sacrificing of this open space.

    • They may exaggerate the open space but they also show the food store to be twice as big as it actually is. As people have mentioned previoulsy, these drawings are merely indicative and should not be scaled.

    • PhilR, I actually believe the drawings show a worst case scenario, which is a common tactic to use. However, it should also be noted that the drawings are only indicative and, therefore, cannot be scaled. However, notwithstandting this, it is possible to get an impression of the block layout and footprint.
The proposed supermarket is shown to be double the actual size required. The supermarket will be upto 1400sq.m in size. The leisure centre is shown to be considerably larger than the supermarket, which again is inaccuarte. The amount of car parking has not yet been determined because this is based on size of the buildings (and the assessed sustainability of the site), however it does appear to be overgenerous, for example more parking is provided for the leisure centre and scout hut than the foodstore, which wouldn’t happen in reality. In light of the aforementioned, I actually consider more greenspace will be provided than currently shown. Furthermore, more greenspace will be provided at the front of wbp. Currently, this area forms an access road and parking area.
I’m not aware of what the Council’s will be for the F&D (or other festivals) to use the football pitch, i don’t know why they would object to this. Furthermore, it should be noted that as part of the proposals for wbp, the bc are proposing to transfer the ownership of the open space to the town council. The town council will, hoperfully, reconsider this decision. Final point, i actually think the open space will be better than what we currently have.

  • Pebbles

Improvement? A leisure centre without a sports hall and a supermarket? I’Ll have what you are on!

    • Improvement –
a leisure center, a swimming pool, a new area for teenagers, a picnic area, a new play area for children, new tennis courts and new girl guides huts and thats before the BC have had an opportunity to analyse the finding of the leisure use survey which may establish further needs…… so no nothing new then!!!!

      • Plus, I would expect the leisure centre to increase the existing ‘user’ capacity and, therefore, it is likely that more sports / activities will be able to take place in the new centre. The proposals will also improve the existing green space. As well as remove the unsightly buildings that currently detract from the quality of the park (and Stone).

  • i this is going to help. give people more things to do. we need this

  • This looks great!

Its difficult to see why an improvement to facilities such as this, with minimal disruption to the existing park would not get great public approval. It gets my vote – cant wait to teach my kids to swim there and we would have loved to go tonight! 🙂
