Fresh start at the Crown and Anchor

The Crown and Anchor in Stone opened its doors again at the end of July after a major refurbishment and change of direction from new owner Custodio Pinto.

Custodio has gone for a quality dining experience at the Crown, in Granville Square, matched by a stylish new look inside. The bar in the restaurant area has been removed, creating a more open, relaxing space for dining.

From Monday to Saturday, lunch is served between 12pm and 3pm, and from 12-6 on Sundays. Items from the dinner menu are served between 6pm and 9.30pm.

Quality sandwiches take pride of place at lunchtime – with artisan breads sourced from Stone’s High Street bakery Stone Baked – and include pulled pork focaccia with sage-and-onion stuffing and apple slaw, steak sandwich with melted blue cheese and red onion marmalade, and a double-stacked BLT.

There’s also maple-cured bacon and cheese oatcakes, smoked duck Scotch egg and Welsh rarebit with smoked pepper relish.

For dinner, starters include chicken and ham terrine, pan-fried scallops with Staffordshire black pudding, and French onion tarte tatin with vanilla roast pears.

Main courses have a classically British feel, with fish and chips with homemade mushy peas and tartare sauce, T-bone steak and seared calves liver rubbing up against more Mediterranean flavours like grilled harissa salmon and seafood linguine.

Lemon posset with blueberry compote and almond shortbread

Desserts include lemon posset, summer pudding (minted strawberries and Eton Mess sorbet) and dark-and-white chocolate parfait with a sticky hazelnut praline. There are daily specials too.

It’s a beautifully focused menu, with the emphasis firmly on high quality.

Head chef Ade Messent has big ambitions for the venue. The 39-year-old who now lives in Stone has worked in kitchens all over the country, including Michelin-star restaurants in London and France.

He said: “In this age of chains and corporate branding, it’s nice to have an individual pub that is really trying to offer something of real quality. My aim is to get the Crown and Anchor a rosette. Apart from the bread, which we get from Stone Baked, everything is produced here in the kitchen, including the ice cream. We’ve got a real passion for high-quality food.”
