Morrisons applies for extended opening hours

Morrisons wants to extend the opening hours at its Stone store.

The supermarket would be able to open from 6am to 11pm – and sell alcohol during that time – if the licensing application is granted by Stafford Borough Council. Current opening hours are 8am to 8pm on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays; 8am to 9pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; and 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

Stone neighbourhood policing unit commander Inspector Carl Humphries says police have no objections to the licensing application. But some residents claim the extended hours could lead to an increase in anti-social behaviour. A consultation is currently under way on proposals to extend the town centre Alcohol Restriction Zone to include the supermarket car park, allowing police to confiscate alcohol from troublemakers.

A Morrisons spokesman said the store is working with police and the borough council to tackle any issues.
