Young sports stars urged to bid for funding

Stone sailor Sarah Norbury

Young sporting stars have been urged to follow in the footsteps of Stone sailor Sarah Norbury and apply for funding to help them excel in their field.

Applications are now being submitted for a share of the county council’s Young People’s Sports Performance Grant Scheme. Each year the scheme provides funding to support young talented sportspeople who either live or go to school in Staffordshire.

The money is used to support the cost of their training and participation in competitions, including expenses such as travel, equipment and accommodation. Grants of up to £500 are available.

Last year the scheme supported 13-year-old Stone sailor Sarah Norbury, who became the British Ladies’ Optimist Champion and has been selected to represent Great Britain in a host of championships across Europe. In July Sarah was top British girl at the British Championships.

The scheme is aimed at young competitors born between September 1st 1989 and August 31st 2000 who are members of their national governing bodies’ development or performance squad. Priority is given to those who are not yet eligible for other existing funding schemes, such as Lottery funding.
