Women's FA Cup

Stone Dominoes LFC had come through four qualifying rounds to make the first round proper of this season’s Women’s FA Cup.

But the lowest ranked team in the competition knew they’d be up against it after being drawn away to one of the best women’s teams in the country: Leicester City Women are currently top of the FA Women’s Premier League.

And going in to the game on Sunday without in-form striker Hannah Perry only made the task harder for Stone. But they went into it under no pressure, knowing they had done brilliantly well to make it this far.

As expected, Leicester played some amazing football with quality one-touch passing. Stone’s midfield trio of Siobhan Haynes, Jules Kendrick and Lauren Ward worked tirelessly in closing down play but Leicester’s quality was always going to show. They were 4-0 up by half-time and eventually ran out 8-0 winners.

But Stone’s team spirit never faltered. Everyone got behind the ball and put in 100% against a team that are three divisions higher. Stone’s keeper Charlotte Perry had an amazing game, and got her hand to a couple of dead cert goals, tapping them out for corners. The defence blocked numerous shots and covered each other when needed. The midfield covered some miles on the pitch and the attackers closed balls down and tried to create chances.
