Students showcase their business skills in style

Stone schools came out on top at the end of a great Young Enterprise trade fair in Market Square on Saturday 5th March.

Teams from Alleynes High School and St Dominic’s Priory School – which was recently saved from closure – scooped prizes at the end of a hard day’s trading.

The Versaleaf company from Alleynes scooped the award for best company after judges had assessed all entrants’ sales skills, marketing expertise and customer service. The company had produced a craft box based on the Japanese art of furoshiki, where material is knotted together to make various items. Each kit had an instruction card and DVD instructions.

Members of Versaleaf had gone the extra mile in the run-up to the day by getting their posters around the town and actually getting two shops – Wikijum and Bags Of Beautiful Gifts – to sell their product! One of their team was also positioned on the High Street with a great arrow sign, talking to farmers’ market shoppers and attracting them over to his team’s stall.

Best business plan award went to Box 8 from St Dominic’s Priory School.

The trade fair, one of the highlights of the annual Young Enterprise programme, saw Market Square become a hive of activity as each of the companies set up their stands to sell their specially designed and manufactured products or services. There were some excellent products on offer, including DIY plastic lampshades, MP3 player speakers made from recycled drinks cans and a fruit-and-veg healthy eating board game for children.

The Trade Fair is held annually to encourage all the teams to build their confidence and skills in a retailing environment. The event was sponsored by Alstom, and an awards night will be held at the company’s Stafford base at the end of March.
