Alex pedals hard for Veterans PTSD Charity

Local resident Alex Preston will be cycling 1,000 miles this month to raise money for veteran’s charity Combat Stress.

Alex, along with his friend Mike, a currently serving soldier, have decided to cycle from John o’Groats to Land’s End, covering the 1000 mile distance in 10 days, starting on 10th August and coming through Stone on the 18th August.

Combat Stress is the UK’s leading charity for veteran’s mental health. For almost a century, they’ve helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, they provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

Alex says; ” As someone who treats PTSD regularly, and hearing some of the stories of the fantastic service that Combat Stress provides, we thought it only fitting that we try and support them as much as we can.

We’re riding 100 miles a day – fighting midges, inevitable rain and punctures but hopefully not each other…. My rule of thumb with cycling (to make the distance clearer for non-cyclists) is that it’s probably the same as running about a third of it. So that’s an Ultra-marathon of 33 miles each day, carrying all our kit, for ten days – and we’re not the lightest individuals in the world. We are training hard but it’s starting to dawn on me that this will be one hell of a challenge!”
