Church bells appeal up and running

St Michael & St Wulfad's Church in Stone

The fundraising campaign to replace the church bells at St Michael’s was officially launched on Thursday 12th May.

The Stone Bells Appeal was launched at an informal evening function at the Crown Hotel. The appeal is to raise money to replace the bells and bell frame in St Michael and St Wulfad’s Church.

Around £130,000 is needed to complete the work.

Special guests at the launch were Lord Stafford, the Appeal Patron, the Bishop of Stafford and the mayors of Stafford and Stone, as well as the wife of Stone MP Bill Cash, who was held up on business at the House of Commons.

Presentations during the evening explained how church bells are cast and tuned and the history of the bells in Stone. The Bishop and the mayors spoke of their interest in the Appeal and their great support for it.

Stone mayor Rob Kenney, in one of his final engagements before a new mayor is appointed on Tuesday, stressed how important it was that the bells continue to be part of the life of the town and presented a donation to the Appeal on behalf of Stone Town Council.

A large variety of events will be organised to raise money – we’ll keep you posted on these as they’re announced.
