We’ve received the Staffordshire County Council Highways Department report on the future of Stone’s Splitter Island – have a read and then decide how you would improve the situation.
County Councillor JIll Hood has released this statement to A Little Bit of Stone:
When I stood for election for Stone Urban County Councillor I consulted with many Stone residents. Common opinion was to get rid of the so-called Temporary Splitter island at the bottom of Christchurch Way. It clearly does not work to ease congestion, we have queues on the Longton Road every day and our traditional carnival parade cannot negotiate the bend from the bottom of the High Street, more importantly it prevents emergency service vehicles and lorries who have been unloading in the High Street from turning right instead they have go straight across to Lichfield Road and try to turn with difficulty to go back on themselves to head to Stoke or Stafford.I have given the report to all Stone town Independent Councillors who are extremely disappointed with the study and have discussed reasons why they do not agree with it, putting forward many alternatives. Each year I have a Highways grant , I asked if I could spend it on the removal of the splitter island with the answer being no. For three years I have been working to get the temporary splitter island removed and I want to share the study with you because I believe local knowledge will help to eventually get the island removed. If you would like to give me your ideas be it for or against I look forward to reading them. County Council officers work very hard and I have nothing but respect for them but I would like to share your local knowledge to help them have a better understanding of why the pointless splitter island should go. email me at jill.hood@staffordshire.gov.uk

There is also an issue with traffic failing to merge in turn from Radford Street (North) onto the Christchurch Way. Most treat it as a junction and give way to traffic from the North whilst attempting to get into the left lane to access Morrisons and the Christchurch car park. This seems to be the point at which the choice of lane is made, so it might indeed be best to widen the survey before making a decision.
