Gritters are being put on standby across Staffordshire as another spell of very hot weather arrives, but this time they will be spreading granite dust rather than salt.
Staffordshire County Council says four gritters will be stationed around the county on Thursday 13 August, with temperatures expected to reach around 34C.
Road surface temperatures can become considerably hotter than the surrounding air during prolonged hot weather.
When roads become extremely warm, the bitumen in the surface can soften and rise to the top, a process sometimes known as “fatting up”.
Highways crews can spread granite dust over affected roads to absorb the softened bitumen and help stabilise the surface.
The council said around 35 roads across Staffordshire needed to be treated, in some cases several times, during the hot weather in July.
Crews will monitor road and weather conditions over the coming days and respond where necessary.
Drivers are being advised to carry water, allow extra time for journeys and plan ahead, particularly if travelling during the hottest part of the day.

“We know the effect hot weather can have on our roads. That is why our highways teams are ready to respond quickly if road surfaces are affected by the heat.
“While gritters are usually associated with winter, they also help us protect roads during very hot weather. We will have four gritters placed across Staffordshire so crews can spread granite dust where it is needed and help keep people moving safely.
“We are asking drivers to do their bit too by planning ahead, carrying water and allowing extra time for journeys. A few simple steps can make travel more comfortable and help everyone stay safe during the hot weather.”
