Life in Colour: Explore the luxury Stone care home challenging perceptions of residential care

When it comes to care homes, the words ‘five star,’ ‘luxury’ and ‘colourful’ may not always spring to mind. A common misconception is that those in residential care can end up leading a grey existence, but when it comes to Stone’s newest care home Shoemaker Place, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

In fact, the team at Shoemaker Place have just opened their doors and are welcoming visitors to book a tour, explore the new home and challenge their perceptions of residential care – all in the beautiful setting of Stone. What are you waiting for?

Shoemaker Place is part of Borough Care, a residential care provider with 10 care homes in Stockport and two in Staffordshire. Borough Care’s motto is ‘Life in Colour,’ which is embraced by its fully-trained team and encourages every resident to live the most fulfilled and valuable life.

Unlike many residential care providers, Borough Care is a not-for-profit, meaning it doesn’t have any shareholders to pay or a need to charge any more than is necessary to provide outstanding care. Instead, Borough Care reinvests in its staff and residents.

Last year it became the country’s largest residential care provider to receive a Real Living Wage accreditation. This means Borough Care pays its staff significantly more than the industry average hourly wage for care workers, something the organisation is immensely proud of.

Borough Care continuously enhances life for its residents through investing in partnerships with organisations like Pride in Care, who help improve support for older LGBTQ+ people, and V for Life, who create healthy and delicious vegetarian menus for residents who choose to live meat-free – or those who just fancy the vegetarian option on any given day!

Food is particularly important at Borough Care, and the stunning dining room at Shoemaker Place will be the highlight of many residents’ day. Head of Catering and Hospitality, Tony Gent is passionate about the menus he is creating at the luxury care home: ‘Colour on a plate’ is our priority. Our team involves and communicates with residents, which shows that they are living the values set out by Borough Care.’

With regards to living Life in Colour, there’s no better authority on the matter than those who live in Borough Care’s homes. When one of Shoemaker Place’s first residents, Eileen, was asked for her view on the home, she said, ‘I am surprised at how nice it is. It is beautiful. The staff, the food – everything is just lovely. This place is bloody marvellous.’ It doesn’t get much more colourful than that!
