Stone resident Nathan Walton is currently in the midst of one of the toughest challenges of his life. Nathan is competing in the 37th edition of the Marathon Des Sables, dubbed the toughest footrace on earth.
The event, which takes place in the Sahara Desert, requires participants to run over 250 km (156 miles) across endless sand dunes, rocky jebels, and white-hot salt plains while carrying everything they need to survive on their backs.
Nathan has been preparing for this challenge for the past two years and expects it to be his most challenging yet. However, he is not doing this just for himself. Nathan is raising money for the Dougie Mac Hospice in memory of his mum, Connie, who passed away in September last year.
The Dougie Mac Hospice is a charity that provides all hospice services free of charge to over 3500 adults, young adults, and children living with a life-limiting illness in across the local area. They offer supportive care to patients, their families, and carers.
Nathan says,
“The care they showed to my mum and my family during her last few days when we needed it was nothing short of remarkable, and I wanted to show my thanks by raising some much-needed funds for them.”
Donating to the cause is simple, fast, and totally secure. Donations can be made through the JustGiving website, which sends the money directly to the charity, saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Nathan has already had fantastic support from friends, family and the local community as he’s already hit his original target, a massive achievement. The fundraising doesn’t stop there though, the hope is that by exceeding the target he’ll be able to generate even more funds for this worthwhile local charity and the fundraising is pushing him on to the finish.
