Sir Gavin Williamson has voiced his opposition to the compulsory seizure of properties by the high-speed rail project, HS2, and stands with residents in Staffordshire who have been affected.
Sir Gavin, who was recently selected as the Conservative candidate for Stone, Great Wyrley and Penkridge, has formally called upon the Government to reveal how many people have been subject to compulsory property seizures by HS2 but are yet to receive compensation.
This follows his meeting with officials from both the Treasury and 10 Downing Street to discuss the impact that the ill-fated project is having on communities in the West Midlands.
Many homeowners, farmers and small-business owners in and around Stone, as well as those across Staffordshire, are facing economic hardship after HS2 seized their property without providing any compensation.
Under both the law and the compensation arrangements agreed by HS2, those who are subject to property seizures are entitled to 90% of the compulsory purchase price upfront. However, it has been widely reported that this is not happening, with many suffering ruin as a result.
Sir Gavin said:
“The seizure of land and properties by HS2 without owners receiving compensation is simply unacceptable. Not only is this project costing the taxpayer billions, but it is costing communities in Staffordshire their livelihoods and economic security.
HS2 has much to answer for, and I will continue to ask the Government these questions until our voices are heard.”
