Sir Gavin Williamson MP visits Alleyne’s Academy

A group of sixth form students at Alleyne’s Academy welcomed their local MP into school last week.

Sir Gavin Williamson MP stands with Year 12 students and staff at Alleyne’s Academy in Stone during his visit on Thursday 13 February.

Sir Gavin Williamson MP visited on Friday 13 February to meet with Year 12 History and Sociology students, following their recent trip to Westminster.

The students had travelled to Parliament in January, where they toured the Palace of Westminster and took part in an educational workshop. As part of the session, they formed their own political parties and developed policy proposals, giving them a taste of how legislation and debate works in practice.

Back in Stone, the visit offered a chance to reflect on that experience and to question their local representative directly.

During the session, Sir Gavin outlined his role as an MP and spoke about the day-to-day realities of representing constituents across the Stone area. There was then time for questions.

Topics ranged widely.

Students asked about the impact of artificial intelligence, the future of student loans, and what it was like to govern during the Covid-19 pandemic. The discussion also touched on Sir Gavin’s experience of joining the Queen’s Privy Council, which he described in detail.

School staff said the answers were frank and engaging, with pupils appreciating the opportunity to ask about issues that directly affect their generation.

The visit follows Alleyne’s ongoing efforts to connect classroom learning with real-world political processes. For many of the students involved, it was a continuation of conversations that began in Westminster just weeks earlier.

Alleyne’s thanked Sir Gavin for taking the time to visit and for answering questions across such a broad range of topics.
