Christ Church Academy has announced an unexpected closure on Monday, 8th January, due to boiler room flooding caused by extreme rainfall.
The return to school after the Christmas break has been unexpectedly delayed for students of Christ Church Academy. The school’s Executive Principal, Mr Wright, communicated this decision in a detailed email to parents and carers, citing significant maintenance issues caused by recent severe weather conditions.
An Unwelcome Surprise Post-Christmas
In the email, Mr Wright expressed his hope that families had a pleasant festive season, only to follow with the unfortunate news: “Over the holidays, the extreme rainfall we have experienced has led to the school’s boiler room being flooded.” This incident has left the school with no functioning heating system.
Taking Immediate Action
The school’s response was swift. Engineers were brought in to assess and repair the damage. Mr Wright’s email stated, “Engineers have been on site and are working to make necessary repairs, which we are hopeful will be completed on Monday.” Despite these efforts, as Mr Wright noted, the weather forecast “for a cold spell next week with temperatures below freezing at night and low single figures during the day” has complicated matters.
Prioritising Health and Safety
Given the circumstances, the school’s leadership had to make a tough call. “Therefore, I have reluctantly made the decision, in consultation with the Chair of Governors, to keep the school closed on Monday 8th January for health and safety reasons whilst repairs are made,” Mr Wright explained in his email. Highlighting that the decision reflects the school’s commitment to the safety and well-being of its students and staff.
Contingency Plans and Communication
The school has prepared for various scenarios. Mr Wright assured parents, “We will know by Monday afternoon whether or not the school will have heating in place for Tuesday and will communicate arrangements for Tuesday as soon as possible via SchoolComms, the school Website and the school Facebook page.” In case of an extended closure, remote learning protocols are set to be activated.
Community Impact and Response
This sudden closure has understandably caused inconvenience to many families. Parents and guardians are now tasked with adjusting their schedules at short notice. However, there is a sense of community understanding and resilience in the face of these unforeseen challenges.
