Walking and well-being: Blaze Trails in the national spotlight

Blaze Trails Staffordshire

A parent-and-baby walking group in Staffordshire has gained significant attention after being featured on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour on New Year’s Day. Blaze Trails, a UK-wide parent-and-baby walking community, was highlighted during the segment hosted by Nuala McGovern.

The organisation encourages families to spend time outdoors, promoting mental and physical well-being for both parents and children.

Coriarna Morris, a volunteer organizer for the Staffordshire branch, spoke on the program about the benefits of walking with babies. Following the interview, the group saw a surge of interest, with over 5,000 social media engagements. Blaze Trails currently organizes free parent-and-baby walks in more than 80 locations across the UK, offering opportunities for families to connect and enjoy nature.

The Staffordshire group was established in early 2024 and has since grown to become one of Blaze Trails’ largest branches. Coriarna joined shortly after its creation and used her experience as a Duke of Edinburgh leader to help guide walks. The group offers a variety of walking options, including pushchair-friendly routes, baby-carrying trails, and toddler-friendly outings. Popular destinations include Trentham Gardens, the Roaches, Dimmingsdale, Stafford Castle, Stone Common, and Downs Banks.

Coriarna emphasised the challenges parents face when trying to get outdoors with young children.

“We’re here to provide walking companions, support, and encouragement,” she said. “All our walks are organised by parents for parents, and we go out in all weather to make it accessible for everyone.”

The group welcomes families from across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent, offering an inclusive environment for parents and children of all ages. It has also been featured on BBC Radio Stoke and Moorlands Radio and will participate in the upcoming Moorland Walking Festival.
