Sir Gavin drops into St Michael’s Hall to talk funding support

The hall, which dates back to 1911, was originally built as a Working Men’s Club before becoming a community space that continues to host a wide range of activities. Today it remains a hub for everything from craft fairs and bingo evenings to drama performances and local groups.

Funding needed for essential works

Trustees of the hall say the building requires tens of thousands of pounds’ worth of work to tackle roof repairs and fit insulation. They have welcomed support from Sir Gavin Williamson MP, who recently met with volunteers to discuss how grants might be secured to help safeguard the building’s future.

Dennis Abbott, Treasurer at St Michael’s Hall, explained the importance of the venue:

“The Hall has been a centre for the community for the past 115 years – offering a pleasant and affordable venue for the townsfolk of Stone and the surrounding area.

“It has progressed from its origins as a Working Man’s Club through to being a social club to a community hall; hosting many community groups. We would like it to remain viable for the next 115 years at least, but it is in need of some tlc and financial investment.”

Support from the local MP

Following his visit, Sir Gavin said:

“I was delighted to meet with Dennis at St Michael’s Hall and learn more about the fantastic work that volunteers undertake to maintain such an important community asset.

“These venues are the lifeblood of communities – providing a spacious, safe place for people of all ages and backgrounds to socialise and participate in various classes. I am committed to supporting the Hall obtain the grants that are necessary to modernise the venue and ensure that it can be used for generations to come.”

A continuing community role

With over a century of history behind it, St Michael’s Hall continues to be a place where the people of Stone come together. The trustees are hopeful that with the right support, improvements can be made to ensure the hall remains a welcoming venue for many more years.
