Crown Wharf shines as the jewel of British pubs

Stone’s Crown Wharf has been crowned the Great British Pub of the Year 2025, taking home not one but two national awards.

The pub collected the title of Great British Town Pub before going on to scoop the top honour at the annual awards ceremony, run by The Morning Advertiser.

A pub with community at its heart

Opened in 2021 as a Joule’s Brewery passion project, Stone’s Crown Wharf was built using recycled and reclaimed materials that reflect the company’s heritage. Despite being a new build, judges described it as a venue “that is both modern and comfortably familiar”.

The team behind Crown Wharf said they were “unbelievably proud” of the recognition and paid tribute to their guests for their continued support.

Standing out nationally

Out of 16 winners in individual categories, Stone’s Crown Wharf was chosen as the overall winner. Judges highlighted its strong community value, atmosphere, and the way it captures the spirit of the traditional British pub.

Ed Bedington, editor of The Morning Advertiser, said: “Crown Wharf is a shining example of hospitality at its best. It is a new build project which draws on all the traditions of the Great British pub to create a venue that feels timeless.”

Recognition close to home

While the awards celebrate pubs from across the country, the spotlight has firmly fallen on Stone. Crown Wharf’s success shows the strength of the town’s pub culture and community spirit.

I’m so proud of Stone for creating this brilliant pub- and so pleased it’s been rewarded. Congratulations to all- Joules, the Council, all paid staff and volunteers.
Now I’d like to see the theatre and the heritage centre winning something as it seems to me that all 3 are interdependent.
