Stone and District u3a is inviting people to a speaker meeting in Stone next month looking at the history of the circus and the life of Philip Astley.

The talk will be given by Andrew Van Burran on Friday 22 May at Christchurch Centre in Stone, starting at 2pm.
According to the event details, Andrew was born in Stoke on Trent into a theatrical family and has worked both backstage and on stage in theatre, circus, film and television.
The meeting will focus on Philip Astley, the Newcastle under Lyme born horseman and military figure widely regarded as a founder of the modern circus.
The event notes say Andrew helped form the Philip Astley Steering Group in 2014 alongside Councillor Wensley Naylon, and will speak about Astley’s legacy as well as his own interest in the subject.
Stone and District u3a speaker meetings are open to the public.
The event takes place at Christchurch Centre, Stone, on Friday 22 May at 2pm. Entry is £2.50, which includes tea, coffee and biscuits.
